I have been using coupons off-and-on for over 20 years. I would occasionally pick up a Sunday newspaper (maybe once every 5-6 weeks), set aside the coupon inserts, and clip out the coupons for items that I expected to buy at some point in the following weeks.
About 10 years ago, I noticed that the window timeframe for coupon redemption was becoming smaller and smaller. I would often notice coupons that had a "shelf life" of only a few weeks. That was a big turnoff to me. It was only years later that I discovered that many stores will accept "expired" coupon. All you have to do is ask. Many cashiers will refuse them. Other stores will accept them as long as their register allows it.
Nowadays, I tend to get 3-4 newspapers' worth of inserts each week. Instead of tossing everything out periodically, I generally keep coupons for a few weeks beyond expiration, purging them at some point after a month or so.
Also, instead of only clipping coupons for the items I expect to buy, I clip nearly all of them, especially if they are "high value amount" or "Buy One Get One" coupons.
My most recent transaction benefited greatly from this. In the past, I would have ignored the "BOGO" and "$2.50 Off Two" CoverGirl coupons, as I have absolutely no need for these items and no person in my life who could benefit from them.
My ECBs had been dwindling of late and BOOM, surprise, CVS promotes in their weekly ad a "Buy $20 Worth of Any CoverGirl Cosmetics, Get 8ECB" promotion. I am clueless about cosmetics, but the ad cited that "prices start at $2.99". So I did some mental math. At $2.99, I would need to buy seven items to hit $20.93 and earn the 8ECB. If I were to use three BOGO coupons, my cost drops to just $11.96. And when I use two "$2.50 Off Two" (for the remaining four non-free items), then my cost drops to just $6.96. So by using the five coupons (3 BOGO and two "$2.50"), I can have CVS pay me to purchase the items. And when I added in the CVS Store Coupon "Save $4 on $20+ Skincare", then my cost drops to $2.96.
So I can spend a mere $2.96 of my actual cash (or use some ECB) and generate an 8ECB. Yes, tax does come into play, but even then, I am ahead by a decent amount.
I usually do not carry coupons for items that I do not intend to purchase, so I sorted through my inventory, found the CoverGirl coupons (which did not expire until the end of March), headed off to the store, and let CVS pay me nearly five dollars (in ECB) to buy a small bagful of cosmetics that I will either donate or give to my nieces to "play with".
Of course, the plan nearly came crashing down when I failed to find any $2.99 CoverGirl items on the limited-inventory rack. The lowest priced items seemed to be $3.49, which led to a whole series of mental math calculations. At $3.49, you only need six items to buy $20.94 worth or merchandise. Using three BOGO coupons drops your OOP to just $10.47. One "$2.50 Off Two" and one "$1 Off One" takes you to $6.97. Add in the "Save $4 Off $20+ Skincare" store coupon, and your $2.97 investment yields 8ECB.
None of this would have happened had I seen the coupon insert weeks ago, said to myself that I would never buy those items, and tossed the coupons. Instead, I used the coupons to increase my ECB total substantially and have $20+ of cosmetics to dole out.

My balance came to $1.46, plus $1.74 in tax, for a total OOP of $3.20. I also messed up a bit, mistakenly using a second "$2.50 OFF" manufacturer coupon when I was only paying for three, and not four. I had originally picked up 7 CoverGirl items from the rack, where the signage indicated that they were $2.99 each. When I scanned the items, I discovered they were actually priced $6.99. Yikes. I returned the seven items to the rack and retrieved six different items priced at $3.49 (confirmed at the scanner). I only needed six to reach the $20 ECB threshold. Thus, I had only 6 items, which would match up to only four coupons and not five. The error meant a $1.50 benefit to me, as I should have used one of my "Save $1 on One" rather than the "Save $2.50 on Two" coupons. There was no register beepage, so the CVS system accepted the coupons. When shopping at CVS, if it doesn't beep, it's good.
Also, some may argue that the CVS Store Coupon "Save $4 off $20+ Skincare Purchase" may not appy to "cosmetic items", but my cashier agreed that cosmetics are used on the skin and accepted the coupon, which scanned beeplessly.
It was very frustrating to shop at this store. I had at least a half-dozen other items to purchase and the store was once again depleted. I did receive a rain check for the 2ECB-generating Crest. Of course, my dollar-off coupon expires in two days, so there goes free toothpaste. I also have a stack of soon-expiring coupons that, combined with sales and clearanced pricing, would make some purchases extra-cheap or nearly-free. But the shelves were wiped out at this rural location.
On the plus side, a formerly bitter cashier seemed really pleased with my transaction. The woman behind me in line joked that she "needed to get her act together" like me and save so much. The cashier then offered that I always do great deals and a great job saving with coupons and sales. I was a tad verklempt as this busy-body-ish older cashier has often grumbled and muttered about my stack of (almost-always) perfect transactions or when I find expired merchandise in the store and request my complimentary $2 "oops coupon".
I started with 5.99ECB, spent 2ECB, and earned an additional 9ECB (8ECB for CoverGirl and 1ECB for the fourth use of my cloth bag). That leaves 12.99ECB for this card.

2010-03-26 -- $1.39
I started with 7.99ECB and wanted to take advantage of the heavily discounted price for Nestle PureLife bottled water this week. There were very few other items worth buying this week, and the few ECB offers that were available all required a significant additional out-of-pocket expense. Plus, the lack of no weekly store $5OFF$20 store coupon and the desire to spend minimal OOP led me to just burn down my ECBs and wait for future deals -- and hopefully future regional store coupons.

This transaction pretty much wipes out my stockpile of ExtraBucks. I started with 7.99ECB, spent 5.99ECB, and earned NO ECB. That leaves my total ECB balance for my this card at a paltry 2ECB.

After coupons, my total came to $1.64. However, there was a whopping $2.50 in tax, making my total out-of-pocket cost $4.14. Yikes. Oh, how I miss those wondeful $5OFF$20 CVS store coupons.
I started with 10.99ECB, spent all of them (!), and earned back 7ECB (4ECB for Glade, 2ECB for the Gillette Razors, and 1ECB for the fourth scan of my cloth bag). That means I end with a paltry 7ECB for this household.

Yet again, my total goes negative ( $25.50 - $25.59 = -$0.09). There was $1.11 in tax, bringing my out-of-pocket total to $1.02.
I also had a second Colgate coupon rejected. The terminology is often murky on coupons and sometimes confuses the cashier. It's often best to not argue too much. This coupon cites "one per purchase" and since I was "purchasing" two Colgate in this single "transaction", the coupon should have been allowed. CVS tends to uphold the policy that "if it scans, we will take it." The cashier attempted to scan the second Colgate coupon for the second Colgate being purchased, but it did beep. She offered to let me make a second transaction by pulling out Colgate #2 and buying it separately, but I just opted to take back the coupon, as it is valid until 03-31-2010 and I will likely be able to use it later.

After coupon deductions, my balance came to 16 cents. Add in $0.91 in tax and my total amount paid was $1.07.
I spent 12.00ECB and earned 12.99ECB (7.99ECB for EaRinse, 2ECB for SpeedStick, 2ECB or Colgate, and 1ECB for using my cloth bag for the fourth time). So after this final transaction of February, I gained 0.99ECB and have 21.49ECB to start the month of March.
